Chinese
known in the heart
My name, Xinzhi (心知), is derived from an ancient poem written by Du Fu (712-770 AD), one of China's most revered poets. The poem, "偶题," has a line that goes "文章千古事,得失寸心知," which Stephen Owen translates as "Literary works are matters of all time; Failure and success are known in the speck of mind." My mother, inspired by this sentiment, chose Xinzhi, meaning "known in the heart/mind," as my name. It serves as a reminder of the depth and timelessness of literature and the intrinsic value of self-awareness.
