I was born in Saigon, in the south of Viet Nam - part of Southeast Asia. My parents named me, and I am proud of my Vietnamese name because it is a banner heralding my unique cultural, ethnic, and familial identities.
I was named after my mother ("Hoang") and my father ("Anh"), and that alone means more to me than any other literal translation. For those logophiles, though, my name references royal yellow, and is associated with a yellow bird of Asia. In Chinese (and I'm 1/8 Chinese), my name is literally translated to "Imperial Hero".
I have been asked twice, by two different individuals in two very different cities and workplaces, whether they can call me another Anglicized name (Becky and Betty) because they had such a hard time pronouncing my name. Besides the love labels & nicknames that have been bestowed on me (and wholeheartedly embraced) by my family and loved ones, there is no other name I would like to use, although Imperial Hero is a fine substitute.
