Merrie is the Dutch word for "mare." Haskell is one of those surnames with a widely disputed meaning, but it's English.
My favorite literalist interpretation of my name is "Happy Ash-tree Spring."
I was named for great-aunt Merrie, who was in turn named for her grandmother Merrie. Original Merrie was Mientje (short for Willemientje) in the Netherlands, probably received an Ellis Island name change to Mary, and chose the spelling that was a Dutch word. Merrie/Mientje was the last in a long line of Willemientjes.
