Brenna in the more traditional spelling is Irish/Gaelic.
People disagree on the meaning of the name traditionally spelled Brenna. I've heard the meaning as "little raven", "raven-haired", "lovely one", "sword-bearer", and there is more evidence for the meanings "little tear drop" and "descended from the sad one".
My mother, whose name is Shana which is pronounced like Shawna, wanted my name to be unique and feminine and beautiful. In the more traditional spelling of Brenna, she chose to replace the "e" with a "y" because it looked prettier and to add an "h" on the end to make it more feminine, somehow. No one who hears my name spells it correctly, and no one who saw my name spelled correctly first pronounces it correctly. It is both a blessing and a curse to have such a unique and beautiful name.
