As I was discovering I was non-binary, I became frustrated that people would call me “Miss” in emails. I started abbreviating my birth name in emails to A. I realized that I liked A as a name. I asked my coworkers to start calling me A.
As a transgender person, my chosen name is very important to me. My name represents my journey in gender discovery, acceptance, and celebration. It may be a short and simple name, but it is perfect for me.
I often confuse people when I introduce myself as A. Some people, not knowing what to say, ask, “How do you spell that?” I feel like the answer is obvious. Some people make a comment about my parents choosing an interesting name for me, them not realizing that it is a chosen name.
